Management of Bloom's Syndrome with Natural Remedies

Bloom’s syndrome gets classified under chromosome instability syndromes. It occurs due to the mutations in the BLM gene. It occurs on chromosome 15. The syndrome typically causes short stature, high-pitched voice, and butterfly-shaped skin patches across the nose. The skin rash shows a lupus-like characteristic. These individuals possess an increased risk of cancer and infertility. Telangiectasia is also common in them. Women with Bloom's syndrome achieve menopause in the early stages of their life. Individuals suffering from Bloom's syndrome must manage their diet and lifestyle patterns to reduce the risk of cancer and other lifestyle disorders.

Role of BLM gene:

BLM gene belongs to an important class of genes involved in making RecQ helicase enzymes. Helicases play an important role in DNA replication. A class of proteins known as BLM proteins gets synthesized by BLM genes. BLM proteins play an important role in the management of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE's).

Cell division is an important process in which cells divide and proliferate.  Normally, after a few cell divisions, the cells decide to stop further division. However, in some cases such as cancers, the cells go on dividing. The apoptosis mechanisms do not work in such cells.
During the cell division, the sister chromatids exchange small genetic material with each other. A common term to describe the condition is known as sister chromatid exchanges (SCE’s). Limited production of SCE’s is useful for the cells. However excessive SCE’s indicates the risk of cancers. Normally 10 SCE’s per cell must be considered normal. However many SCE’s indicate chromosome instability syndromes such as Bloom's syndrome and cancers. BLM protein prevents excess SCE’s and maintains stability. Mutations in the gene affect the functionality of the BLM protein. Without BLM protein, there is no repair for damaged DNA. Unrepaired DNA may result in various health complications such as cancer.

Natural therapies in the management of Bloom's syndrome:
Probiotics: They include a good source of live bacteria. They prove good for intestinal health. Individuals with Bloom's syndrome get colorectal cancers. In the case of these individuals, probiotics help in reducing the chances of colorectal cancer. Good sources of probiotics include curd, yogurt, buttermilk, and kefir. Also include cheese, paneer, and other milk products in the diet. Make sure to use hormone-free milk sources for making probiotic formula. Alternatively, get a branded probiotic pack. Probiotics also ensure proper digestion and promote overall digestive health. Probiotics act like immunity boosters.
Shea butter for skincare: Shea butter is good skincare natural cream. Its application suits the skin and helps in healing rashes. Shea butter helps to reduce the redness of the skin. Hence, it also acts as a natural sunscreen cream. Those having a latex allergy or any other kind of allergy must avoid using shea butter. Shea butter works well in the case of butterfly rashes and lupus. Shea butter also helps to reduce dermatitis flare-ups.
Green tea: Green tea acts as a fruitful source of antioxidants such as catechins and epigallocatechin gallates. They are the best antioxidants and manage to prevent excess SCE’s in the cells.
Turmeric: Turmeric is a golden spice with great medicinal properties. It is rich in an antioxidant known as curcumin. Curcumin is a yellow pigment responsible for imparting a yellow coloration to turmeric. Curcumin acts as an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, immunity booster and possesses many other properties. Add 1-2 teaspoons of turmeric curcumin to milk or water and boil for a few minutes. Consuming turmeric tea helps to detoxify the entire system. It also reduces the chances of any micronuclei, damaged cells, sister chromatid exchanges, and free radicals occurring in the body. The specialized research found the beneficial effect of turmeric curcumin on sister chromatid exchanges. Turmeric curcumin provided a protective effect against chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges, as reported in many of the research documents.

Turmeric inhibits the activity of auto-antibodies in case of lupus-related disorders. (Autoantibodies include the main factors responsible for organ damage). Turmeric boosts immunity. It acts as an immunomodulatory agent since it regulates the activity of immune cells. Turmeric curcumin regulates epigenetic processes. It may help to control gene expression and DNA methylation.
It is difficult to completely cure genetic disorders since they occur because of an underlying genetic mutation. However, these conditions get managed with diet restrictions and natural remedies.
